When Mick finally returned from meeting with Nebari and the queen, he found us in a full-on fiesta. Despite the scary announcement Valen made, Todd and Emily were insistent that we celebrate Mick and I pairing, officially, with a kick-off party. My embarrassment at being congratulated for mating eventually eased, given the emotional significance of the act, and after a couple shots of the special Vimpiri liquor, Vishut, I was in the mood to party, too. Why not? I’d been anxious for months, wondering if Mick’s refusal to just bite my damn neck meant he was still harboring doubts. Now I was certain he was committed, and I was ecstatic.

However, my party mood immediately dampened on seeing his face. Even though he was typically a little pale, he looked downright ghostly. His expression was stiff, as if he were sick to his stomach and trying not to throw up.

“Mick, what happened? Is everything all right?” I set down my glass and rushed to join my fingers with his. Despite my worry, my lungs filled with air, grateful for his presence. Something always felt off when he wasn’t there, and I was always relieved when we were together again.

Ignoring my hands, he wrapped me tightly to his chest with both arms, his face buried in my hair where he inhaled deeply. Pulling back, he smiled. “No, everything’s fine. I just missed you.”

“Are you sure? You don’t look good.”

“Um, thanks?” He teased but attempted to look natural. “Nebari wasn’t able to give us much information, that’s all. But she’s looking into it.” With one arm wrapped around my shoulders, he steered me back to the kitchen and pressed a kiss to my temple. He eyed the half-empty Vishut bottle on the counter. “What are we celebrating?”

“You two finally getting it on, obviously,” Emily giggled. “About damn time, I’d say.”

“Yeah, man, congratulations,” Todd grinned, pouring another round of shots.

Mick adopted a wounded expression. “And you started this party without me, the guest of honor?”

You’re here now, drink up!” Todd handed around the glasses and we clinked them together. “Lucy, you’ve waited a long, long time for Mick to find the balls to bite you, and we are so happy he finally managed it.” He cringed when Mick feigned a half-hearted punch at his shoulder. “Cheers to you, Lucy!”

“To Lucy!” The others echoed, and we all downed our shots of the warm vanilla liquor.

Eventually, the drink ran out, and the revelry wound down. We shared a quiet dinner, then Emily and Todd excused themselves to bed.

Mick and I snuggled up on the couch. Tucked under his arm and gazing contentedly at the fire, I wasn’t thinking about much. Occasionally I’d feel a tingle run down my neck where it brushed against Mick’s shirt, but it didn’t distract me from my peacefully drifting thoughts. For a short time, my mind went over the more vibrant details of our first pairing, trying to recapture the delicious sensations and sear them to my memory. Chills drifted up
